Goal
Move all the cards to the foundations.
Layout & deal
All 52 cards are dealt at the beginning of the game, face-up. First 36 cards are dealt evenly across six tableau piles (called the "garden"), with six cards in each pile. The remaining sixteen cards are set aside in the reserve called the "bouquet."
Allowable moves
- Tableau piles are built down by rank, regardless of suit or color.
- Only one card at a time may be moved within the tableau. Groups of cards cannot be moved together.
- Any card from the reserve (bouquet) is available for play at any time and can be moved to a tableau pile or directly to a foundation.
- Any card may be placed on an empty tableau pile.
- Foundations are built up in-suit from Ace to King.
Tips and tricks
- Try to clear a tableau pile. An empty tableau pile gives you a powerful advantage, as any card can be placed on an empty pile. With an empty tableau pile it is much easier to reorganize the cards in the tableau and uncover cards needed for the foundations.
- Use the reserve cards only when needed, e.g. to help free up a tableau pile.
- Pay close attention to the cards below Kings. A King can only be moved to an empty tableau pile or, typically near the end of the game, to its foundation. If you need a card that is trapped below a King, plan ahead to keep an empty pile available for relocating the King.
Variants
In Wildflower Solitaire, the core rules remain the same, but sequences of the same suit within the tableau can be moved together as a group. Brigade Solitaire is a slightly easier game by spreading the cards across seven tableau piles with five cards each, rather than six piles of six. Stonewall Solitaire is a more difficult variation in which some cards are dealt face-down, tableau building follows alternating color, and correctly ordered sequences can be moved together.
Because all cards are visible from the start and only one card can be moved at a time, Flower Garden Solitaire is considered similar to FreeCell.
